Alexander Technique and fitness
More than a hundred years ago, Alexander pointed
out the risks of exercising. His main concern was that if we
don’t move well in our everyday activities, doing exercises
may not produce lasting benefit and may cause injury. While his
arguments are still valid, evidence for the potential benefits of
exercising is now overwhelming.
Recently, Alexander teachers such as Steven Shaw (swimming),
Malcolm Balk (running and fitness), Roy Palmer (sports) and
Patrick Pearson (rowing) have pioneered developments in the
improvement of fitness.

Exercising can be pleasurable & injury-free
with the help of Alexander principles. AT can be applied to all
forms of exercise, including:
- walking and running
- swimming
- use of the rowing machine and rowing
- gym activities
- Pilates, yoga & T’ai-chi
